Environmental Benefits

Brereton Solar Farm

Alongside the significant community and economic benefits, Brereton Solar Farm will also bring significant environmental benefits at a local, national and international level whilst contributing towards Barbados' energy security and national targets.

40MW of Renewable Energy Generation

Reduced reliance on imported fossil fuels.

24,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide saved each year.

Power up to 22,000 homes per annum.

  • Brereton Solar Farm will bring significant environmental benefits and will contribute towards the Barbados Government target of using 100% renewable energy by 2030.

  • The proposed development will generate 40MW of green electricity and will be capable of storing up to 40MW of renewable energy which will power approximately 22,000 homes per annum.

  • The proposed development will offset approximately 24,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. This is equivalent to 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide being displaced over the 50 year operational life of the solar farm.

  • The solar farm will contribute towards energy security and flexibility for Barbados especially through the battery storage facility. Thereby reducing the islands reliance on carbon-based fossil fuels which are harmful to the environment and cause climate change.

  • The savings made on reducing the reliance on oil and gas imports will redirect government funding towards public services including healthcare and education.

  • The inclusion of a battery storage facility is now regarded as an essential tool for the operation of low-carbon electricity networks. The battery storage facility will allow the solar farm to continue to meet customer demand even when natural solar resources are not available.
